Around 1914, Prince Damrong Rajanubhab studied the history of Sukhothai. Due to the education about the history of Siam was bustling, there was established The Siam League of Investigation, as The Corporation of Archeology. King Rama XI traveled along the north and wrote “Teaw Mueng Phra Ruang” when he was just a prince and the vise president of the corporation. Prince Damrong Rajanubhab was trying to search for the history of the Sukhothai as it can be seen from the ancient inscription, especially for the first one, which was about “The Guardian of the city” existed and protected the mountain and its name was “Pra Ka Pung Pee”. The inscription tells about the guardian as the most powerful and the protector of this whole city. In addition, when Prince Damrong Rajanubhab was finding the sacred objects, he found the statue of the female that was carved from stone in standing posture as he assumed it must be built in the past. After that, it never found any statue like this, and the people in that city have considerably worshiped this statue. Therefore, it is believed that this statue is the “Pra Ka Pung Pee '', the sacred object of Sukhothai. There is a tale about this statue that has been commended as the ghost that is most powerful. The people of the Sukhothai believe it was Nang Sueng, mother of Pho Khun Ban Mueng, and King Ramkhamhaeng Maharaj. She was a sister of the Pho Khun Pha Mueang, the Hero of protecting the city from Cambodia. Sukhothai’s people had invited that statue to be in their place as the holy statue and for a long time have passed, it has been called as “Pra Mae Ya”, Mother of Sukhothai. Currently, The statue of Phra Mae Ya is enshrined in the Phra Mae Ya shrine, which has 2 statues in front of the shrine. The sacred fame of “Phra Mae Ya Sukhothai” is very famous with the faith of Phra Mae Ya, she dispels the involvement. In the past at the Songkran Festival, there was a Phra Mae Ya statue parade to ask for the rain. Mostly it will rain if they use the real statue. “Phra Mae Ya” can give the children, alleviate suffering and disease even the successful on business or job. Therefore, when anyone has trouble they will come to Phra Mae Ya Shrine. Most of them succeed we are known by the number of people who come to redeem with pig or chicken and flower with incense throughout the redeem because of the belief Phra Mae Ya will come to redeem for them.
